Networking No-nos: Three Questions You Shouldn’t Ask at Your Edinburgh Reception Event

If you’re attending an event at a reception venue in Edinburgh, you’re probably in for an evening of incredible entertainment, canapes, tray service… and Champagne or cocktails.  While drinks and socialising with colleagues and clients can be fun, alcohol also has a tendency to loosen the tongue and make people a little more forward than they usually are in the office.  If your Edinburgh reception is to be enjoyable for all, you want to make sure you don’t put a foot wrong.

Making a social faux pas at your reception could do long term damage.  If you want to win people over and avoid the embarrassment of the awkward conversation stopper, here are three questions you should avoid asking your fellow guests…

What are we Here for?

People host receptions in Edinburgh for all sorts of reasons, from product launches, promotional events and leaving dos to wining and dining potential clients.  If you’ve been invited to a corporate reception event then make sure you know what the purpose of it is and why you, specifically, have been invited – what role have you played in getting that product off the ground? Are you expected to schmooze that new client ahead of the contracts being signed?  It sounds very obvious, but too many people simply hit ‘yes’ when they RSVP, just because they hear the words ‘evening reception’.

At a venue such as the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC), the large and incredibly versatile floorspace means there’s plenty of space to mingle with fellow guests and get in some time networking.  Make sure you talk to the right people, but be clear in your mind what you ultimately want to achieve from the evening.

How Much do You Earn?

Ok, so you’re unlikely to come straight out with it in such blunt terms, but after a couple of drinks lots of people try and wheedle the information from colleagues and other guests in more subtle ways.  Trying to work out whether someone is in the same pay band or earning the same salary as you is a no-no at your corporate reception – however politely you try to frame your probing questions, people will find it intrusive and clam up.

If you’re looking beyond Edinburgh reception venues and want to host your reception in Scotland’s second city of Glasgow, you’ll find the Scottish Events Campus (SEC) an ideal, unique venue.  Steer the conversation away from pay and money and you could find the venue itself becomes something of a talking point – as one of the city’s most iconic buildings, the SEC is well-used to playing host to receptions, conferences and other major corporate events, so you know your evening is in safe hands with their expert events team.

What do You Make of So and So?

Gossip really doesn’t have a place at your reception event.  Of course we all like to hear the latest bit of juicy tittle tattle, but no matter how well-oiled you might get as the drinks flow, just remember that this is still a professional event which calls for professionalism.  These are colleague, after all, not your best mates down the pub.

Try and balance the amount of fizz you drink with the amount you get to eat.  At Edinburgh Zoo’s Mansion House, the expert catering team can offer a delicious menu of tantalising bowl food and canapes, with tray service enabling you to keep moving around the room and networking.  Enjoy some incredible finger food whilst looking out over the immaculately kept gardens and the flamingos – no chance you’ll be drinking on an empty stomach here!

Tread carefully when you’re enjoying your evening reception event in Edinburgh, and try to keep your questions tactful.  For more information or to book one of these Edinburgh reception venues, please don’t hesitate to contact Lime Venue Portfolio today.
