Training on the Rise
Ask most CEOs, Managing Directors and Chief Executives where their most important asset sits, and they will point you towards their people. The strength of a businesses performance is almost always down to having the right people, doing the right things, in the right culture.
People and employees are complex, but in general to keep them motivated HR Strategies focus on the tenets of reward, incentive and investment; and when it comes to investment, training is the most important.
Training isn’t just a way of helping an employee become better at what they do. It is a signal that the business cares about that person’s career, that they want them to flourish and will invest in supporting their growth. And although these are business-focused messages, it is amazing how well this reflects on staff happiness and productivity.
Training is big business, HR departments, board rooms and shareholders all understand the massive value this investment contributes to the business and more and more sophisticated methods and strategies are being implemented to generate the best possible outcomes.
Just one of these elements will be the venue, and at Lime Venue Portfolio we are delighted to host a large amount of training, graduate recruitment programmes and staff improvement courses across our portfolio. We see them all the time, we work with trainers and HR managers and we get to experience first hand the benefits of these meetings.
As ever in events content is king, but we believe that context is also incredibly important, and the venue has an opportunity to make a telling contribution to the learning experience through the environment that it creates.
As a group of unique venues we know that we offer something different to the trainer. Unusual venues by their very nature are identifiable; they send a message to the delegate and create specific environments. They are inspirational and create the setting for creative thinking; a training course at Twickenham Stadium, The Kia Oval or the Liberty Stadium elevates the session from the white wall environments some employees are used to.
Equally, some unusual venues are situated in the countryside, away from busy city life, and allow space, focus and escape for both trainer and trainee. These courses are often for CPD accreditation or specific learning objectives that require intense concentration.
These programmes are also incredibly tough, they take a great deal of energy from the delegate; great venues offer the right environment for learning and for relaxation. A day at Hever Castle mixes the right environment for concentration, but also the space to settle and regroup afterwards.
Supporting Great Training
As with all events we believe that the organisers that choose unusual venues are thinking harder than others about creating the right environment for their group. Training; be it team building, graduate training, apprenticeship programmes, senior management courses, or chartered and accredited learning, all require different environments that need to be curated by the organiser.
To educate a delegate takes skill from a trainer, someone who understands their development needs, and how best to coach them to improve their performance and progression. We work in partnership with these professionals to understand how the venue can make a contribution. We can look at locations, settings and rooms that send a subliminal or direct message.
Some of our venues have prestigious histories of learning, exploration and self-improvement. These, in their own right, underline the importance of the course and make them richer for it. Venues aren’t the be all and end all of the learning process but they make a telling contribution.
So does food. What a delegate eats can have a major impact on how productive the training is for them, and trainers, caterers and venues are becoming more and more sophisticated in the total training experience – right down to the food.
We know that heavy carbohydrates at lunch create a sleepy atmosphere in the afternoon; that while caffeine can be a stimulant, other fruit and vegetables create longer lasting affects on delegate concentration. Trainers respect this and work closely with the venue and the catering team to choose the right menus that both feed the mind and encourage better learning and sustained concentration for longer periods.
Food also underlines the sense of care that a delegate feels when they are given the chance to attend a training course. The right food shows that someone is thinking about their health and wellbeing, indulgent food at the end of the day shows reward and appreciation.
Training and the Events Industry
As the industry recovered after the last economic crash it was led solidly by the training sector. It was the last event that was cut and the first to be reinstated. This is because businesses can see the direct impact of training on the bottom line, and they value it.
Investment in training grows ever more sophisticated and those venues and catering companies that value it are part of a general industry effort to do things better; at Lime Venue Portfolio we’re delighted to be doing our bit.
