Having just had our highly successful annual conference at the superb Sheffield United, we have first-hand experience of working with this month's Interview with an #Eventprofs. We talk to Helen Johnson, Senior Events Coordinator, at Creative Team Events about why team building works and what works best!
Lime Venue Portfolio [LVP]: Hello Helen, nice to meet you. For those that don’t know, please can you give us an introduction about Creative Team Events and what you do?
Helen Johnson [KD]: We specialise in events which bring people together, uniting for a fun, shared experience.
The Company began over 15 years ago specialising in drumming team activities and due to the huge success of these events our reputation grew and grew and we now provide a range of activities to suit a variety of budgets, group sizes and timescales.
LVP: Wow 25 years is a long time; consequently you’re very knowledgeable on the industry, which gives clients peace of mind. What sort of clients do you work with?
HJ: You name it - we work with them! Mainly corporate clients - with some social events. We work with a large range of client sectors as well - from all across Europe. We’ve recently managed an Anniversary event for a client of ours who wanted their staff and their families to have a fun day (inflatables, marquees etc) - it was a fabulous event, even if it did rain for 8 out of 10 hours! And another of our favorites for a film fan festival for 1200.
LVP: The Company began over 15 years ago specialising in drumming team activities and due to the huge success of these events our reputation grew and grew and we now provide a range of activities to suit a variety of budgets, group sizes and timescales.
HJ: Great to hear you liked it. It is definitely a popular activity. We have many music and performance based activities such as clapping energisers, singing, dance and percussion. Our Haka is hugely popular thanks to the Maori facilitators who so passionately lead the sessions. In addition, we have more traditional workshops such as chocolate making, murder mysteries and The Apprentice.
For the outdoors we can host Segways or Quad biking, treasure hunts, It’s a Knockout, Country Pursuits and Dragon Boat Racing. The list is endless really!
We have recently added Fire Walking to our range and this has proven to be a really big hit already!
LVP: Scorchio! I can imagine that would be a good choice if the organiser really wants to challenge people’s perceptions of what they can and can’t do! So, what’s your most popular team building activity?
HJ: Drumming, Haka and Boomwhackers lead the way in popularity.
Boomwhackers is hugely successful due to the ease at which it slots in to agendas, value for money and the great results it delivers. It is also ideal for large groups so if you have 1000 delegates who need a morning wake up then this is the event for you!
LVP: Team Building is a competitive market, so why do your customers choose to work with you?
HJ: We have built up such a fabulous reputation for the team activities we provide. We show attention to detail, taking as much stress and planning away from our client when we can, and the sheer quality of our facilitators is second to none with them being booked to lead these events the world over.
LVP: What do you think team building brings to events/conferences? Why bother? Surely it just wastes time during a conference and costs money?
HJ: Not at all! Team Building activities can provide that real spark in the day. Whilst the business content is the reason why everyone is there, delegates take great value from a shared experience. It engages them during what can be quite heavy days, raising lots of smiles, as well as getting different departments/colleagues, who would not normally interact together, communicating and connecting. Delegates also appreciate the event organisers investing in the experience for them, making them feel valued.
LVP: Our Boomwhackers experience certainly did just that. Do you just do team building activities or do you offer any services?
HJ: We also offer services such as theming, entertainment bookings, live performances and complete event management. Due to our theatrical and musical roots, we have established so many great relationships with artists and can recommend the most suitable performer for your event. For theming, we have found that the most effective way of bringing a concept to life is not with props but with actors or singers. Their ability to interact and really bring everyone in the room on board is inspired!
LVP: What do you think the future holds for team building?
HJ: From the amazing feedback we receive, we know how important our clients find this element of their day. They realise its importance, the message that it sends and how valuable the participants find it.
Galvanising and inspiring teams takes the very best professionals to facilitate the event and the pride we take from this time and again is immensely satisfying. The future looks very rosy indeed!
Not for the faint hearted..Firewalking
