The Return of Team Building & Incentives

It’s only when business struggles, when economic climates put pressure on companies, that we really see where procurement puts value; and team building and incentive meetings have proven themselves as one of the most important investments a businesses can put into its staff.

In the moments after 2008, companies were more interested in shedding staff, not looking after them, and certainly not rewarding them. However, as business stabilised, corporates looked at what – and more importantly who – were going to lead them into prosperity and growth once more; inevitably they looked at teams and people.

To do this well they needed to focus on a people strategy; the importance of the HR department was continuously underlined, and strategies were put in place to train, develop, keep, and then reward the very best people. The companies that got this right have flourished.

When HR Meets Events

As a brand that spends its time with businesses; be they communicating in conferences, training in our rooms, or incentivising in our leisure areas, we have seen the very best of HR strategies being implemented alongside events departments.

It’s no longer acceptable – or profitable – to set up a jolly for the sales team without thought or consideration, and reward and incentive has to be strategic and managed intelligently. More and more we are seeing company conferences with an incentive extension, training away days with an award, or hospitality rewards with a strong business message.

These are intelligent events; they understand that the organisation of a business event is always done in a way that sends a business message, its never just a thank you; its a hug, its information, its an explanation, its a look to the future. It’s also a way of communicating why teams and individuals have performed so well, to give them wider company recognition, but then plot the course for more growth, and a brighter future to all; every event is about communication.

It is in this context that we have seen the end of the myth that HR, procurement and event managers are in a tussle for budget; but are united around a common understanding of the positive business impacts these events have. The HR manager creates the themes and messages they want to be enforced and communicated. Then the event organiser uses their skills to create a positive environment, an endorsement of the business culture, and create a long-term resonance from the event; one that sees groups and companies focused and incentivised for months to come.

The role of unusual venues

Given this context, its important that the team building has the right setting and that the business message is communicated from the outset. The right venue can set the tone early; an unusual venue host may provide an early business message; picking Twickenham Stadium after a 6 Nations win for England Rugby sends out a message that we’re here to win, that we understand success, and that for this event we’re sharing our ethos with like minded winners.

A trip to Hatfield House creates anticipation ahead of the event; we’re coming together to take stock, to give our teams air and space, to thank them by taking them out of the fight and into a relaxing and inspirational surrounding. These venues can accommodate multi day events to give the teams even more space and time.

Both outdoor and indoor space are great for team building exercises, activities, and challenges; the fun, games and excitement that we associate with bringing a team together; be it Duck Herding at Weston Park, or a corporate commando challenge at Hever Castle. For more formal reward or acknowledgement presentations, there are beautiful rooms, and elegant surroundings that add kudos to the occasion.

It would be remiss of us not to talk about food as one of the best rewards possible. We know that 42% of all event feedback is around the food, and we know that great food sends a message as much as bad food. Team Building events are a chance to show that staff are important, that the coming together of a team creates value, so let’s make sure the food doesn’t leave a bad taste in their mouths.

Great food is a reward in itself; it shows care and passion from the organiser, it’s a way of saying thank you in an understated and universal way.
