Why our healthy focus?
Our “5-a-Day” DDR’s are all about helping your meetings and conferences be more successful.
We all know the importance of eating healthily in our day to day lives and how what we eat can have a huge effect on our concentration levels, energy and motivation. Even though this seems common sense, the effects of what people eat on the success of events is often overlooked.
We have all been to a conference or meeting and munched our way through pastries, cookies and muffins and been left feeling bloated, de-energised and slothful. Suddenly our minds wander, we begin to feel a bit guilty for eating that 2nd (Ok 3rd) cookie, and, as the speaker talks about the relative merits of "Cap-and-Trade versus Emission Taxes for Controlling Carbon Emissions" our minds drift off...
Now, imagine we arrive full of anticipation at our unusual cultural venue (an experience in itself). We’re greeted by the friendly events team and shown to our meeting room. Juicy, crisp fruit is laid out on the table. We drink a refreshing innocent fruit smoothie. The natural fruit sugars in the smoothie quickly give us the energy we need to kick start our day and ensure that we are not only listening to the speaker, but positively engaged with them. We came here for a reason, to listen and learn, and now we're taking everything on board.

A little word from innocent
Here at innocent, we've always found that there's something about modern living that makes it tricky to be healthy. That’s why we started making our tasty little drinks - to make it easy for people to do themselves some good (and make it taste nice at the same time).
Our drinks are made from 100% whole crushed fruit, pure juices and absolutely nothing else.
And as well as being a delicious healthy treat that works as a great snack, every little bottle contains 2 of your 5-a-day. Where did 5-a-day come from?
It's hard to believe but the recommendation to eat 5-a-day is now twenty years old. As far as we know, the first time the 5-a-day recommendation was made was in a report by the National Research Council in the US1. Well, we say report, but it is actually more of a doorstop, at over 700 pages. The Report recommended: "every day eat five or more servings of a combination of vegetables and fruits, especially green and yellow vegetables and citrus fruits" (pg. 672).
The World Health Organisation soon followed with a report that stated "on the basis of observed national intakes for regions or countries, e.g., southern Italy and Greece, where high intakes are associated with low rates of coronary heart disease and of some types of cancers, a per [person] intake of 400g/day of vegetables and fruits (potatoes, other tubers, and cassava not included) is considered desirable" (pg. 98).
Why 5?
We say five, so that the message is clear, simple and also because if the target was set any higher it could seem quite unachievable to some. But let's not kid ourselves here; five is really the minimum we should be getting. The actual amount of fruit and veg you should be getting will depend on your overall dietary requirements, which in turn depend on your age, sex, and activity levels.
How are we doing against the 5-a-day target?
Well, the latest numbers we have from the Government is a bit of a mixed bag. Their surveys show that on average, intakes for adults are around 4.4 5-a-day portions. Not bad, eh? But this is an average figure. Intakes for men can range between 0.9 to 10.2 portions and women's intakes can range from 0.3 to 8.3. This means that really, only 37% of men and 33% of women actually get their 5-a-day. There's still plenty of work to do and with the “5-A-Day” DDR we’re trying to help.
